Though that’s a fictional account from the cult film Fast Times at Ridgemont High, it was reality in the early 1980s — scalpers trolling malls, record shops and parking lots looking to move tickets for the biggest acts of the day.

Oh, how times have changed. Scalpers now are using banks of computers with hacking programs to lock up wholesale blocks of the best seats. They employ technology to circumvent those blurry phrases you must enter to secure tickets on the primary market sites. In doing so, they’re jumping ahead of true fans, who are finding it harder and harder to secure tickets at face value.

“Well it makes me sick,” said concert promoter Chuck Morris, who learned of the phenomena through a CBS4 investigation. “The law was made to protect the disabled and the bad guys figured out a way to get around it.”

The issue came to light through Matt Feeney, a Winter Park resident who broke his back in 1988 and is a paraplegic. Feeney is confined to a wheelchair but enjoys going to Red Rocks shows. He was excited when he found out that one of his favorite bands, The String Cheese Incident, was booked into Red Rocks for three nights in July.

Randy Brown said a story that appeared in The Journal Gazette and on the newspaper’s website contained inaccurate information about the face-value ticket prices for the Van Halen concert on July 31.

Ticket prices have not yet been determined, according to Brown. He said, “The Journal Gazette gained its inaccurate information from a secondary market ticket sales website that engages in unethical and misleading marketing practices. Consumers and journalists alike can be easily misled by a simple internet search when looking for event tickets online.”

This year, three months before the acts take the stage at Fort Adams State Park, the show is sold out of every ticket for its Saturday and Sunday shows. The only tickets still available are those for the newly added Friday show, featuring Wilco.

Festival Producer Jay Sweet called the rapid sales “a tribute to our incredible artists, partners, volunteers, local and national media, and most ultimately, our dedicated fans.” But some of those fans are upset to see tickets for the festival now on sale online for hundreds more than the original price.
